Since I have no experience in photographing auroras, I couldn't see the aurora when I took this photo. I only looked at the camera and the aurora was not obvious. I had to go home and process the photos to see the effect. It felt like I was back in the days of film cameras. I had to develop it after taking the photo. Only then will we know whether it is successful!

I've only recently moved to Bristol, after 30 years in Oxford, and am deeply inspired by both its beauty and its history. It has been a trading port for a thousand years, and is st its heart a sailor's city: an anchor tattoo of a town. It also has, to me, a unique light and when the sun does deign to appear, the sky is Bristol Blue, which is what I've called this photograph. I enjoy macro photography highlighting parts of everyday object wee usually overlook. In this picture, I noted the opening of the white rose petals to reveal the reds and oranges of the stamens and pistil against a golden glow formed from the light diffusing through the scene, like the opening of a painted paper fan.
